Despite signs that Microsoft is fighting back in the battle of the search engines with the newly launched Bing, a new report claims it has lost market share for the first time since its launch. Bing’s global market share of search queries fell to 3.25 per cent from 3.58 pre cent in September compared to the previous month, according to web analytics firm StatCounter

Bing’s US performance is also down, falling one percentage point to 8.51 per cent from 9.64 per cent. Yahoo! took a 9.40 per cent share – down from 10.50 per cent. Bing is a clear example of Microsoft desperate approach to their sinking in the market.

“The trend has been downwards for Bing since mid August. The wheels haven’t fallen off but the underlying trend must be a little worrying for Microsoft.”

The reports indicate Microsoft wants to revitalize its lagging mobile business by taking on the big guns, the iPhone and Google’s Android phone, which recently shifted 1m units in the US.

Microsoft’s smartphone is said to incorporate its Zune mp3 player and Window’s Mobile software, with hardware made by a third party manufacturer, likely Taiwanese company HTC.The new Microsoft phone is also said to integrate Windows Marketplace, similar to Apple’s App Store from which users can download various applications for phones for a small fee.
